Hydrothermal Carbonization of Spent Coffee Grounds

With increasing coffee production and consumption, the amount of by-product is also increasing. Therefore, there growing worldwide interest in using these by-products as a renewable energy source. In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was conducted with subcritical water to improve fuel characteristics spent grounds. The content varied, mass ratio between dry sample set 1:1.5 1:4. reaction temperature increased by 10 °C from 180 250 °C. thermal products were investigated through yields, elemental, proximate, heating value analysis. analysis results, increased, carbon fixed oxygen volatile matter decreased, resulting an increase calorific value. Thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy on products. To investigate their storage characteristics, chemical demand conducted. results showed that temperature, increased; also, became similar those coal. addition, more hydrophobic increased.
